Most Important Lesson of Career Day

Career Day is a time for the children to imagine themselves as doctors, lawyers, builders, farmers and other respected members of their community.

But, Sophie wants them to learn something else too.

She tells the children that education can give them the knowledge and skills to pursue their dreams. But, if they someday become successful, they should never allow their position or status to make them look down on someone whose life turned out differently.

Her message is simple: Learn. Work hard. Dream about what you can become. But, whatever you become, never forget to be kind and respect other people.

It’s a big lesson for little children, so Sophie speaks to them in their native language, Setswana. When we asked Sophie whether children this young really understand such a lesson, she didn’t hesitate and exclaimed, “they know what I’m talking about!”

Perhaps, Career Day isn’t only about teaching children what they might become someday.
