Christmas is Coming Early at Sophie’s Creche!
For months now, Sophie has struggled to purchase a full set of bowls, plates, and spoons for the crèche at local stores to meet new government standards prohibiting plastic plates. Each time she has asked the local vendor to reserve the utensils, they have sold out. Her offers to pay in advance for the product are refused.
Sophie finally ordered her plates, dishes, and utensils online, and they still were not able to complete her order. Plus, this popular store added a surcharge for each item ordered online. For being cost-conscious and value-driven, these were the best dishes Sophie could find to meet the new government regulations.
These are the first bowls and plates finally delivered to the crèche. It’s hard to believe the difficulty in buying a new set of bowls and plates, especially when we Americans can just go to Target or Walmart or order items online.
Once they are removed from the plastic, Sophie has instructed her cook to wash all plates, bowls, or utensils before using them.
Aid Africa’s Children has learned over the years that “this is Africa.” Some things are done very differently. What may seem easy or something we take for granted, many of these conveniences are not readily available in rural Africa.
We have to remember that Sophie’s Creche has no running water. They suffer electrical outages throughout the year. Sophie communicates to AAC through her cell phone. She doesn’t own a computer. Nor does she get a salary to run the crèche that she started.
Sophie's Creche is fueled by donations and support from people like you, her community, and the love she has for the children in her village.
We are lucky and grateful to have her!
