First Breakfast at Sophie’s Creche with New Bowls!

It’s a big deal at Sophie’s Creche to be able to have porridge in a bowl instead of a plate! In the past, teachers watched vigilantly to make sure the kids didn’t burn themselves from the hot porridge spilling over the edges of the plates.

There just were not enough bowls to replace the broken ones to give to all of the kids at Sophie’s Creche. So, many kids ate their porridge on plates.

Now, a new government health mandate wants all creches to eliminate serving meals on plastic bowls and dishes because plastic dishware causes cancer. The consequences of this ruling means Sophie needs to replace whatever she has left of all her plastic dishes and utensils.

After many months of visiting local stores, trying to get her order filled, she went online to make her purchase. She even offered to pay in advance to reserve the items, still the stores refused.

Sophie ended up purchasing 30 stainless steel bowls, 30 stainless steel dinner plates, and a new 4 liter electric frying pan for a total of $189.29. For the creche kids this purchase is life-changing! No more worries of getting burned by porridge, and eliminating dishes linked to causing cancer is a big relief.

When Sophie visited Chicago in 2023, she made some life long new friends, Pastor Ron Ellis and his wife, Bonnie of the New Christian Life House of Prayer and their congregation. Their very generous donation purchased Sophie's new dishes, bowls and frying pan.

It seems like yesterday when Sophie, and AAC members, Alan Lyons and LuAnn Wing went to meet and visit this Southside Chicago church that so generously donated to help Sophie’s Creche. An incredible warmth radiated from the church to embrace these strangers to make sure they felt welcomed. At one point, Sophie even said, “I feel like I’m home."

This video shows the first day the kids used the new bowls for their porridge. There is a humble gratefulness from each of the toddlers, as their two fellow classmates serve them.

Each of kids are actually thanking their servers for bowl of porridge.

It is rare for each of these kids to stop and say thank you with such grace.  Sophie encourages us to  "listen to them softly in the background as they say thank you It’s a beautiful sight."
