Teaching the Four Seasons in Early Childhood
At Sophie’s Creche pre-schoolers are introduced to identifying the four seasons through everyday experiences. They feel the warm sunshine on their faces, a cool breeze in the air, or the rain getting them wet.
Slowly, the idea of the four seasons start to take shape. The seasons themselves become the classroom. Nature provides the lesson and each day offers something different to discover. Watch three year old, Goitsione, which means God Knows, recite the four seasons.
Recognizing these simple observations help children make sense of their environment. They begin to recognize patterns, understand why things feel cold or hot. They begin to connect what may happen next, when the sky gets dark, and the thunder starts.
There is wonder in noticing change and the beauty of nature. There is confidence in naming it.And, there is a joy in understanding something new.
